Zonta International Strategies to end Violence Against Women

When Kavira Muraula, who lives in the Democratic
Republic of Congo
, complained that a soldier had raped her, her punishment was being raped again and bayoneted in the stomach. When the International Violence Against Women Act becomes law, our government will take emergency measures when there is mass violence against women in conflict. Please support this urgently needed legislation and help survivors like Kavira.
Urge Your Members of Congress to Support the International Violence Against Women Act
Today the 111th Congress returned to
Washington
, D.C, for a few short weeks of legislative activity during the so-called lame duck session. Right now, we have our best opportunity to pass the International Violence Against Women Act (I-VAWA; HR4594/S2982). We need you to take action now so we can build on the work that’s already been done, rather than starting over with new leadership, new faces and a new Congress next January.
I-VAWA is groundbreaking, bi-partisan legislation that would – for the first time – make ending gender-based violence a priority for
U.S.
foreign policy and international assistance. Please help us pass I-VAWA now!
Violence against women and girls is a human rights violation and a worldwide pandemic. One in three women around the world has been beaten, coerced into sex, or otherwise abused in her lifetime. It’s happening to someone right now, as you read this.
The I-VAWA would improve our government’s response when women and girls are victims of sex trafficking and rape during war and would provide aid to women’s groups on the ground that are working to help survivors of domestic and sexual violence. It would focus resources on prevention and ensure that our dollars are used in the most effective ways possible to help the people who need it most. In some countries, it truly could mean the difference between life and death for a woman or girl.
No woman or girl deserves to be beaten or raped in the
United States
or anywhere in the world. We are asking you to urge Members of Congress to support the International Violence Against Women Act and pass it before Congress adjourns at the end of the year. Please take action now!
